Yvonne McGuire was born in 1936 to her parents Henry and Grace Lorentzen in their farm home in North Dakota. She graduated from Washburn High School in 1954, and graduated Magna Cum Laude, with an A.B. Degree from Asbury College, Wilmore, Kentucky in 1958. She received her Masters of Education Degree from Indiana University at Bloomington.
She, with her late husband Byron McGuire, served at the Navajo Methodist Mission School in Farmington, New Mexico. With their five children, they studied at the Spanish Language Institute in San José, Costa Rica, and served as missionaries with shortwave radio station, HCJB, the “Voice of the Andes” in Quito, Ecuador, South America
Mrs. McGuire’s artistic talent was a blessing to multitudes in Ecuador as she and Byron with their children held services beneath the equatorial sun in village marketplaces in the Andes Mountains. Huge crowds gathered to watch Mrs. McGuire draw large colored chalk pictures depicting Bible scenes accompanied by Spanish music and scripture, followed by preaching, special music, and distribution of gospel literature to the eager audiences. She also had a weekly program, “Manos Creadores” (Creative Hands) on HCJB’s pioneer television station where her chalk pictures portrayed a Bible message. In addition, she painted a huge mountain scene for the backdrop of a TV program and made other visual aids.
Before and following their mission service, Mrs. McGuire taught art for a total of thirty-one years in the public school at Austin, Indiana. Upon returning from South America, the McGuire's purchased a farm adjoining Byron’s old home place near Underwood, Indiana. There they developed a retreat site and founded the mission, New Life International, that ministers locally and reaches out worldwide to the needy with water purification.
Since securing her father's place in History with her two historical volumes, "Daddy Was An Artist" and "Homestead Memories On The Buffalo Paunch Creek", Yvonne has turned her heart toward home and written two more books entitled, "Seasons of New Life", a pictorial glimpse into her Indiana home and ministry. And now in 2021 a beautiful volume of nature vignettes with artwork, entitled "Reflections". A collection of her late husband clever story-telling embellished with her pencil sketches.
Mrs. McGuire lives at the New Life International home site in Southern Indiana where she continues to write, do some artwork, and help host many visitors. She enjoys her ten grandchildren and developing her flower gardens. You can find her on Instagram as "WordLens101" or on Facebook as Yvonne E. McGuire, Author for details on what projects she is working on currently.
